Anyway, the long car ride gave me a chance to go through my ipod, and I listen to a lot of the same songs, but by different artists. Vacation is awesome, but no internet sure isn't. Maybe that will teach Dream to dress for the occasion next time.Īlthough I would have loved to see Melanie Fiona, Wale, Luke James, Anthony Hamilton or Nas win awards this year, I think everyone who won an award deserved it.WOW. “I want to thank the swap meet for his hat,” he said in reference to The-Dream’s cap. Although, channel ORANGE was great as well.Īnother notable moment was when Jay Z, Kanye West, Frank Ocean and The-Dream won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “No Church in the Wild.” Jay Z remained his cool self as he allowed Ocean and The-Dream to speak but he didn’t leave the stage before criticizing The-Dream’s terrible wardrobe choice. Call me biased, which I probably am, but Kaleidoscope Dream was a better album. Frank Ocean took home the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album, beating out Miguel and nemesis Chris Brown, who was criticized for not standing when Ocean went up to accept the award. Sadly, there’s not much to say of this performance.Īlthough there were a lot of winners in the R&B and Hip Hop genres, only two were actually received on air. The final performance of the evening was by host LL Cool J, Chuck D of Public Enemy and Travis Barker. I won’t say the performance was horrible, but it wasn’t my favorite. Apparently the Twitterverse wasn’t feeling the performance because they called it horrible. Ocean sung his single “Forrest Gump” while dressed in a yellow suit and his signature headband. While I am a fan of channel ORANGE, I found this performance underwhelming.
Perhaps the most anticipated and hyped performance of the evening was that of Frank Ocean. Considering the impact Bob Marley had on the reggae world, I expected a better tribute than this. Rihanna stepped out on stage to sing “Could You Be Loved.” She was joined onstage by Marley’s sons, Ziggy and Damien. Sting helped him sing before he transitioned unto “Walking on the Moon.” By this time, I had forgotten this was supposed to be a tribute to the late Bob Marley. Bruno Mars started the tribute with his song “Locked out of Heaven,” which was amazing until Sting joined him. For me, the performance started off a little weird. She hit the stage again for a tribute to the reggae great Bob Marley. Instead, everyone was focused on her cuddling in the front row with her love Chris Brown. Rihanna performed a sensual version of her fan favorite “Stay” from her latest album. Maroon 5 performed their single “Daylight” before AK joined them to perform her hit “Girl on Fire.” Surprisingly, it was a very good collaboration. Other performances of the night included a mash-up between Maroon 5 and Alicia Keys. He took the stage twice and was featured in a few commercials that aired during the three and a half hour broadcast. He definitely owns the title as “Comeback King” after last night. JT then premiered a brand new song from his forthcoming album. “Get up out that seat, HOV,” he surprised fans as Jay Z got out of his seat and walked on stage for his verse on the song. Screens turned black and white as he took the stage for his first song in almost seven years, “Suit & Tie.” She deemed his performance as the “sexiest damn thing I’ve ever seen.”Īrguably, the moment everyone was waiting for was the return of Justin Timberlake.
Miguel showed off his vocal skills as he belted out “Adorn.” Kelly Clarkson even mentioned him in her acceptance speech where she stated that she didn’t know who he was but she wanted to work with him. My question was answered when a personal R&B favorite of mine, Miguel, took the stage along with Wiz Khalifa for the shortest performance of the night, if you don’t count the final number with LL Cool J, Chuck D and Travis Barker which was cut off midway. After a circus-like performance by Taylor Swift, another award for Adele and numerous pop/rock/whatever presentations and performances, I wondered, “Where is the R&B?” However, my initial excitement quickly changed almost an hour into the show. I was excited for this show because of the exceptional amount of recognition given to R&B and Hip-Hop this year (FINALLY!). Last night, the 55 th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony aired live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles with LL Cool J as the host.
